From beginning reading and math all the way to high school completion. Earn your GED® and open doors to better jobs, college, and a stronger future. Classes available in English and Spanish.

Six levels of English instruction — from Beginning 1 all the way to Advanced. Build speaking, listening, reading, writing, and vocabulary skills. Home country ID accepted.
Trade your Green Card for an American Passport. If you've held a Green Card for 5 years (or 3 years if married to a US Citizen), you may qualify to apply for US citizenship.
On-site childcare so nothing stands between you and your education. Our child care center is available for children of enrolled students, ages 12 months through 12 years.
Getting to class shouldn't be a barrier. We offer van transportation Monday through Thursday mornings for students — and children enrolled in Little Lakers can ride along too.
What started as a community response to a crisis has become one of Barrow County's most enduring success stories.
ALB is operated by a volunteer Board of Directors and is funded through individual donations, annual campaigns, fundraisers, grants, and corporate contributions. Funds provide GED test scholarships, teacher salaries, Chromebooks, instructional materials, childcare, and free transportation.

Education is about more than the classroom. We provide the support you need to show up and succeed.
On-site childcare at the Wimberly Center means your children are safe and cared for while you're in class — just steps away. Available for ages 12 months through 12 years.
Transportation is available Monday through Thursday mornings, picking up students throughout Barrow County. If your child is in Little Lakers, they can ride the van with you.
The GED exam costs $160 total (or $40 per section). Adult Literacy Barrow offers scholarships to help cover this cost — so money doesn't stand in the way of your credential.
Don't stop at the GED. We have transition counselors who can help you take the next step into post-secondary education — even while you're still completing your GED through dual enrollment.

Getting my GED® from Lanier Tech and getting accepted into the Georgia Institute of Cosmetology has brought me closer to obtaining my goal of opening a salon in my Great Grandfather's old General Store.
My son was so proud the first time I ordered a Combo Number 1 without his help. He no longer has to translate for me! I now have my GED diploma and I am a citizen of the United States.
Looking at myself years back, I only spoke Spanish and sign language. The time and dedication the English teachers give us is priceless. And now I'm an employee of the City of Winder.
Why do I want my GED? There are many reasons: to do what I couldn't do before, for self-confidence, for a better job, and to feel empowered.
I am especially proud to be awarded my GED and have my children see how far I have come. I hope it leads them to learn the importance of graduation.
Education is like a gift from God, and once earned, it can never be taken away. Getting my GED means the world to me. Without this program, I wouldn't have made it this far.
The annual Literacy Ball is more than a gala — it's a celebration of what's possible when a community invests in its people. Proceeds fund every program Adult Literacy Barrow offers.
Adult Literacy Barrow is governed by a volunteer board representing business, government, education, and community organizations across Barrow County.
